Activity we enjoyed...

As I mentioned before, my kids and I started a Spanish Conversation Club for tweens and teens at our local library. Each week we gather as a group of about 15 to talk and play in Spanish. I was a teacher for many years so working with this age group isn't anything new to me, but I'm constantly trying to come up with activities that the kids will enjoy. This can get difficult when you factor in the multiple levels of Spanish we have, the fact that even the most boisterous kid is typically shy when speaking in a minority language, and the fact that I'm still not really bilingual (I had to look up the words for trident, hot air balloon, incubate and bunk bed today in the group).

I have a set of about 30 different games that we could play depending on group size and language levels and I think most of them have gone over pretty well but activity had the kids shouting out answers which is a dream when they typically won't respond to me! Here are some of the games we play and I'll eventually write a little post about each of them with links.

Today was our first time playing (what I called) Veo Veo. I found some drawings online that was a page full of different things happening on the page. Think of the old Highlights Magazine What's wrong with this picture or a Richard Scarry Word Book or even a Where's Waldo picture. The crazier the better! I found several here. I put that up on the projection screen and asked the kids to tell me what they saw in the picture. It started out pretty slow with "Veo un tiburón en el agua y un pulpo en la roca" but they were producing! Before long, the kids had desolved into fits of laughter with "creo que el niño va a chocar el hombre con su pala" and "ese hombre cree que es Aquaman con su...¿cómo se dice trident?...tridente!"

Usually an activity only lasts about 15 minutes before the kids are bored but they were begging to keep going. Overall, I was really happy and thought I'd share the idea. I also tried to create some of my own images through copilot and they were really crazy like with giraffes underwater. Ultimately I decided not to use those but it's an idea if you have more patience than I do :)
