About Us

We are a family of six living in the United States. Let me take a few minutes to introduce us.

Taken a few years ago on our first trip back to PR in 11years 

I was born in the US and took Spanish classes from 2nd grade on. I decided to move to Puerto Rico in 2006 for a teaching experience and taught Math at a private, English-speaking middle and high school (where I met Hubby). I spent 6 years in Puerto Rico trying my best NEVER to speak Spanish because I was so afraid of it, but am conversational and now kick myself daily for not working on my Spanish while I was immersed in the language and culture. 

Hubby was born in Puerto Rico and spoke only Spanish until he was 8 years old and moved to the mainland of the US. He has spent about half his life here and half in Puerto Rico and is bilingual although often feels uncomfortable in Spanish since his schooling after second grade was all in English. 

El Cantante, born in Puerto Rico, is a 15-year-old boy who has never met a stranger and loves talking to anyone in Spanish or English. He loves music with a passion, especially Rap at the moment, but also Country and Pop. He's also autistic which throws in some interesting challenges!

Boneripper (sorry, I let him choose his own name for the blog), born in Puerto Rico, is a 13-year-old boy and a twin. He loves sports, video games and being artsy. He's my quietest child and also the one all of the other kids gravitate towards because he's so easy-going. 

Bella, born in Puerto Rico, is our only daughter and is a 13-year-old twin to Boneripper. She is a little mama to all of the boys and helps me keep everything in order at home. She loves to read and we often have to force her to stop and interact with the rest of the family. She's a budding chef and is in the kitchen almost as often as I am.

Lil Poundcake (he chose his own name as well), born in the States, is a 10-year-old boy and the "baby" of our family. He loves video games and playing outside with his friends, and hates reading. He has so much energy that I often said I was gifted with three babies at the same time so that I was prepared to handle him when he came along. But he's also super helpful around the house and refuses to let his age stop him from participating with the older three.

Conversation Club

Last year I started attending a Conversation Club for Spanish learners at the library and I loved it! We meet for 2 hours weekly - the first hour we converse in Spanish (with native speakers helping us) and then we switch to English for the second hour and we reciprocate. I've known about it for much longer but was too afraid to attend until my kids pushed me into being brave and just trying it. I've made some great friends, learned pointers,  new vocabulary and probably best of all, I've lost a lot of fear of speaking in Spanish.  So of course I started looking for something similar where the kids could use their Spanish. I was pretty hopeful because we live in a large, ethnically diverse city in the South with a big Hispanic population. I found lots of homeschool classes for beginners which wasn't a good fit after 5 years of Spanish exposure. 30-Day Challenge

I try to make challenging ourselves in Spanish a daily part of our lives. I started a Preteen Conversation Group (which I'll tell you more about later) that has several different levels of Spanish speakers so I created this 30-day challenge to push each of the kids to reflect on and work toward their Spanish learning goals.  Click image to download

Activity we enjoyed...

As I mentioned before, my kids and I started a Spanish Conversation Club for tweens and teens at our local library. Each week we gather as a group of about 15 to talk and play in Spanish. I was a teacher for many years so working with this age group isn't anything new to me, but I'm constantly trying to come up with activities that the kids will enjoy. This can get difficult when you factor in the multiple levels of Spanish we have, the fact that even the most boisterous kid is typically shy when speaking in a minority language, and the fact that I'm still not really bilingual (I had to look up the words for trident, hot air balloon, incubate and bunk bed today in the group).  I have a set of about 30 different games that we could play depending on group size and language levels and I think most of them have gone over pretty well but activity had the kids shouting out answers which is a dream when they typically won't respond to me!
